Position Overview
We are seeking an exceptional founding Data Scientist / Machine Learning Engineer to establish and lead our entire data science and ML operations from the ground up. This is a unique opportunity to join an innovative company as the architect of our ML strategy, infrastructure, and capabilities. As our first ML hire, you'll have autonomy to design, build, and scale our ML platform while directly impacting product development and business outcomes.
This senior-level position is ideal for a self-driven professional who thrives in ambiguous, high-ownership environments and can operate independently to achieve measurable results. You'll be responsible for creating the foundation that will support our ML initiatives for years to come, with the opportunity to grow and lead a team as we scale.
Responsibilities
Design and implement an end-to-end ML platform including training pipelines, deployment frameworks, and model serving infrastructure
Establish automated training/retraining systems with event-driven and scheduled triggers
Create robust monitoring, testing, and evaluation systems for model performance and outputs
Build flexible inference capabilities supporting both batch processing and real-time API access
Research, prototype, develop and optimize ML models across diverse use cases from conception through production
Partner with product and business teams to identify and prioritize high-value ML opportunities
Provide technical guidance and feasibility assessments for potential ML applications
Develop internal workflows that leverage ML to improve operational efficiency and business outcomes
Create scalable processes and documentation to enable future team expansion
Qualifications
Advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or related quantitative field
5+ years of hands-on experience in machine learning, data science, or related roles with demonstrated impact
Strong programming skills in Python and experience with ML frameworks (scikit-learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch, etc.)
Production ML experience including model deployment, monitoring, and maintenance in real-world applications
Infrastructure and platform development experience with cloud services (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerization technologies
Database and data engineering proficiency with SQL, data pipelines, and large-scale data processing
Independent problem-solving ability with a track record of delivering results with minimal supervision
Business acumen and ability to translate technical capabilities into business value
Excellent communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and presenting to stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications
Startup or high-growth environment experience with comfort in ambiguous, rapidly changing situations
Leadership and mentoring experience with a track record of growing technical teams
Experience with modern ML tools such as MLflow, Metaflow, Sagemaker, or similar platforms
